India Missile FDC

India FDC
Name: BrahMos
Date of Issue: 22 December 2008

"Defence of country is time honored function of its Government and an essential attribute of sovereignty and economic growth".

Extensive use of subsonic cruise missiles in Gulf war brought about stupendous changes in strategic thinking and convinced nations' world over to lay more emphasis on development of cruise missiles. India and Russia conceived an idea of jointly developing a cruise missile far superiors to the one used during Gulf war. This laid the foundation of a unique Joint Venture "BrahMos Aerospace" with partnership from both countries, represented by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) from India and Nauchno Proizvodstvennoe Obiedinenie Mashinostroyeniya (Scientific & Production Organization Of Machine Building) (NPOM) from Russia. The technological voids of both were to be covered by either side and the program commenced in 1998.

BrahMos, name represents two well know rivers, Brahmaputra of India and Moskva of Russia. The calmness and serenity of Moskva River and the power and speed of Brahmaputra depict the main characteristics of "BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile", the product of the Joint Venture. The combination of speed, power and precision achieved by this missile is unparallel and by far the best in the world in this class of Weapon System.

BrahMos Aerospace became the first Joint Venture between India and a foreign partner from mind to market and took on the responsibility of design, development, production and marketing. This Joint Venture was for the first time formed in the history of India by converting Loan repayment into Investment with equity share ratio of 50.5% and 49.5%. An integration of Public – Private Industries from India and Russia as consortium resulted in production of world class prduct which resented an opportunity of penetrating the world market.

BRAHMOS is a supersonic missile that approaches target with three times the speed of sound and is capable of being launched from multiple platforms i.e. land based launcher, warships, submarines, maritime patrol/ASW aircraft and combat aircraft.

Unleashing technological asymmetry in the battle space, this supersonic cruise missile is capable of tilting the balance of war in favour of the possessor who can use it imaginatively and decisively.

Numerous flight tests have taken place from different platforms in variety of congfigurations such as from ship to ship, land to ship, land to land and ship against the land. Today the BrahMos is operational with the Indian Navy and Army.

Success of BrahMos is attributable to many known major factors such as vision, government support, mutual trust between partners, sharing of available best technologies.

The trust and support provided by the two Governments coupled with the outstanding management leadership of the Joint Venture has resulted in a world class product which has become a model for all future co-operations between our two countries and has escalated relations between the two countries well beyond the buyer-seller equation that has persisted for decades.

Israel Radio FDC

Israel FDC
Name: Galei Zahal
Date of Issue: 17 December 2008

On Sunday, 24 September, 1950 a trumpet blast erupted from the radio at precisely 6:30 p.m., followed by "HaTikva", Israel's national anthem. Thus began the very first broadcast of Galei Zahal, the IDF Broadcasting Service. The improvised studio was located inside a former school building in Ramat Gan. Army blankets were hung along the walls in an attempt to muffle background noise.

Galei Zahal was born in the State of Israel, which, at that time, was dealing with the absorption of waves of immigrants and contending with distress and poverty. For many years Galei Zahal broadcasts were mainly geared toward soldiers, including music programs bearing soldiers' greetings and various broadcasts related to the IDF. The station was unique in that it incorporated soldiers serving in the regular army into journalistic positions, including reporters, editors, producers, news broadcasters, music broadcasters, musical editors, announcers, etc.

Following the Yom Kippur War in 1973, the station began broadcasting 24 hours a day, expanding its broadcasts to include all citizens by adding news broadcasts and current affairs programming. For years, it was the only Israeli station that continued to broadcast throughout the night, to be joined later by "Kol Israel" Broadcasting.

Suggestions have been raised on more than one occasion stating that the station should be closed and its broadcasts ceased, but due to protests by the public, the Knesset and the Israel Broadcasting Authority Governing Council, none of these proposals has even come to fruition.

In November 1993 Galei Zahal began operating another station, establishing Galgalaz, which broadcasts music interspersed with traffic reports and has extremely high listener rates.

Galei Zahal's various programs are currently presented by leading broadcasters, who are among the most highly esteemed journalists in Israel, alongside young, talented and energetic reporters, producers and editors. This combination makes Galei Zahal a relevant, young and characteristically Israeli media outlet.

Thanks to a widespread array of transmitters located throughout the entire country, as well as through the internet, the station's broadcasts reach IDF bases and private homes throughout Israel and abroad, making it a central component of Israeli media in general and of public broadcasting in particular.

Comment: It has a very very big mistake on this FDC. The issue date of this set is 17.12.2008. but do you find? The date of the local postmark is 17.09.08. if my friend hadn't added a franking label (it has printing date) on this FDC, everybody should have puzzled.

India IISc FDC

India FDC
Name: Indian Institute of Science
Date of Issue: 14 December 2008

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a 'Research Institute' or 'University of Research' by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in the twilight years of the 19th century. A long period of almost thirteen years was to elapse from the initial conception in 1896 to the birth of the Institute on May 27, 1909.

The early history of the Institute is a fascinating chapter in the story of higher education and scientific research in India. The cast of characters in the drama that led to the establishment of the Institute includes, in addition to its charismatic and generous founder J.N. Tata, figures from the pages of Indian history. There is Swami Vivekananda, whom J.N. Tata befriended on his famous voyage to the United States, the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his mother then acting on his behalf, and Lord Curzon the Viceroy of India, whose first task on arrival on December 31, 1898 was to receive a draft proposal prepared by the Provisional Committee set up to plan the establishment of the Institute.

The plan was shepherded through many difficult years by Burjorji Padshah, a close associate of J.N. Tata. Unfortunately, J.N. Tata died in 1904 unaware that his vision would indeed be realized a few years later. When the British Government finally issued the Vesting Order in 1909, an unmatched experiment in higher education and research was launched in India. IISc is truly the first example of a public-private partnership in this country; an institution, whose evolution over a century is testimony to the robustness of its foundations.

The Institute occupies nearly 400 acres of prime land in Bangalore, generously donated bythe Maharaja of Mysore in March 1907. Indeed, the contribution from the princely state of Mysore was the decisive element in determining the location of J.N. Tata's proposed institution. Remarkably, in a gesture unmatched in the annals of private philanthropy in India, Tata did not wish his name to be associated with the Institute. His dream was to create an institution that would contribute to the development of India. The name, Indian Institute of Science, which was finally chosen, reflects in every way the wishes of J.N. Tata. Visitors to Bangalore who seek out IISc still have to ask local residents for directions to the 'Tata Institute', a clear recognition that Jamsetji Tata's act of generosity has remained undimmed in public memory, despite the passage of a century.

The Institute began with only two departments: General and Applied Chemistry and Electro-Technology. The first Director, Morris W Travers began the task of organizing the Institute shortly after his arrival in India at the end of 1906. Travers began the construction of the main building, which is one of Bangalore's landmarks today. The Departments of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry together with the Library were among the earliest to be established. The Physics department came into being in 1933, when C.V. Raman became the first Indian Director of the Institute. In the century that has passed since its inception, IISc has grown to become India's premier centre for research and postgraduate education in science and engineering. The evolution of the Institute over the past one hundred years has mirrored the development of science and technology in India. A long history, a strong tradition of academic research and an ambience that favours scholarly activity have been important elements in making the Institute a most attractive place for students and faculty.

As the Institute has grown, several new areas of research have been established, many of them for the first time in India. The Institute's departments in fields ranging from Biochemistry to Aerospace Engineering have served to nucleate research and development in both the public and private sectors. The faculty and alumni of the Institute have been responsible for establishing and spearheading many new institutions and programs across the country, reflecting in a real sense, a major contribution of this centre of learning to national growth and development. Homi Bhabha conceived the idea of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and an Atomic Energy Program while working in the Department of Physics. Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of India's space program was an alumnus. Following his premature death, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was built by the farsighted leadership of Satish Dhawan, who simultaneously held the position of the Director of the Institute with the greatest distinction. The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur was established by J.C.Ghosh, who was the Director of IISc in the critical period 1939-48, during which much of the activity in engineering was initiated at the Institute.

Many of India's most distinguished scientists have been associated with the Institute as students or faculty. Notable among them are G. N. Ramachandran, Harish Chandra, S. Ramaseshan, Brahm Prakash, A. Ramachandran, C.N.R.Rao and R. Narasimha. Alumni of the Institute head many major organizations in India and abroad. The Institute offers a variety of Master's degree programs in Engineering, an integrated (post-B.Sc.) program in sciences and Ph.D. programs in a wide spectrum of disciplines in science and engineering. The research laboratories at the Institute are well equipped. Many national facilities are housed at the Institute. The library and computational facilities at the Institute are amongst the best in India. A major program for modernizing laboratories is underway, catalyzed by a special grant provided by the Government of India in 2006. The Institute hosts hundreds of visitors from India and abroad every year and is the venue for many major national and international academic events.

The face of science and engineering research has been changing very rapidly over the past few years. In approaching the second century of the Institute many new activities have been initiated. Notable among them are the interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Mathematical Sciences, Chemical Biology, Earth System Science, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Nanoengineering for Integrated Systems. These programs are intended to blur the traditional boundaries between disciplines, thereby promoting cross-disciplinary research. An M.Tech. program in Climate Science has also been introduced. A new Centre for Earth Sciences has been established and two new centres in the areas of Neuroscience and Climate Change are expected to begin activities in the near future. The Institute hopes to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research in a vigorous fashion in the years to come. The Institute is also committed to promoting post-doctoral research in the areas of science and engineering. The Institute engages in interactions with society and industry through a variety of outreach programs. The Centre for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy (CSIC) and the Society for Innovation and Development (SID) promote collaborative interactions with industry, while the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) provides an opportunity for working scientists and engineers to enrich themselves academically. The Institute actively promotes programs that encourage bright young school and undergraduate students to undertake research careers. The Institute's Young Fellowships Program in Science and Engineering seeks to bring young students to the campus in summer. The Institute also administers the Kishore Vaigyanik ProtsahanYojana (KVPY) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The Institute's commitment to socially relevant research is specifically emphasized by the activities undertaken at the Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST), together with the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), which is housed on the campus.

To live and work at the Institute is a special privilege. Anniversaries are an occasion for both celebration and introspection. In reflecting on the past, present and future of the Institute, in this Centenary Year, an exchange between Morris Travers, the first Director, and Lord Willingdon, the then Viceroy, is worth recounting. Willingdon went around the Institute in June 1914 and said: "I had no idea that there was anything like this in India". Travers responded: "There is nothing like it in India; and nothing better in Great Britain". In ensuring that this sentiment is true, a great deal of work remains to be done.

When decision about organization of the Society for construction of People's theatre in Moscow was adopted, Savva Morozov was one of its Patrons.

The biggest donations to the Theatre building were made by Morozov and Stanislavsky (28 000 rubles). Morozov himself inspected construction of the Theatre, not trusting anyone. He refused his summer holiday, moved to the construction site and participated in all works.

The construction of a new building cost 300 000 rubles to Morozov. The total expenses of the Patron for the Arts Theatre were 500 000 rubles.

One of the greatest capitalists in the country, the councillor-manufacture, did not disdain any work in the Arts Theatre - be it a labor of a property-man, electrician, costumier or carpenter.

Шуваловская школа оказала значительное влияние на развитие плавания в дореволюционной России.

Comment: I have only found the description in Russian, and I have checked the swimmer on this stamp, if it has any prototype, I guess he is Yury Prilukov. He should be a freestlye swimmer (Prilukov is), he has a bathing cap like this (Prilukov has), finally, he is famous enough.

Taiwan Year of the Ox S/S FDCs

Taiwan Souvenir Sheet FDCs
Name: New Year's Greeting (Issue of 2008)
Date of Issue: 01 December 2008
Number: Sp.526

The upcoming Chinese lunar New Year will fall on January 26, 2009. It is the ji-chou year (ji is the sixth of the Ten Celestial Stems and chou is the second of the Twelve Terrestrial Branches and signifies the year of the ox).

Denominations:
NT$12.00:
The sheet features a design suggestive of a yin and yang symbol composed of ripples of water, an ox and a leaf floating on water. The design, in conjunction with an expression meaning "a turn for the good" that begins with the two characters "niu-jhuan" (a homonym of "ox" plus the character for "turns"), implies that in the year of the ox the world will be renewed. On the left margin, the magpie with the tip of a plum tree symbolizes auspiciousness by suggesting the expression "joy rises to the tips of one's eyebrow" ("eyebrow" is a homonym with "plum" in Chinese). On the right margin there are three Chinese expressions about the New Year that convey the idea of joy. One of these is written as a work of calligraphy, whereas the other two have the look of printed impressions rendered from carved Chinese chops. The classic pink color scheme imparts a serene atmosphere to the sheet.

Comment: I have received two FDCs which were sent from 2 different post offices. The upper one was sent from a temporary post office, it has an illustrated cancellation on it. The nether one was sent from a post office, it has a "ox (牛)" word in the postmark (新竹牛埔).

Hong Kong Judiciary Minisheet FDC

Hong Kong Minisheet FDC
Name: Judiciary
Date of Issue: 27 November 2008

The Judiciary is a cornerstone of our society. Its mission is to maintain an independent and effective judicial system which upholds the rule of law, safeguards the rights and freedoms of the individual, and commands confidence within and outside Hong Kong.

Denominations:
$1.40:
The Statue of Justice
The Statue of Justice, represented by the Greek goddess Themis, holds a sword in one hand and scales in the other. The scales represent the impartiality with which justice is served and the sword symbolises the power that is held by those making the decision. The statue is blindfolded to show that justice is not subject to influence. The Statue is located at the Old Supreme Court (it is where the Legislative Council Chambers has been housed since 1985).

$2.40: The Court of Final Appeal
The Court of Final Appeal is the final appellate court in Hong Kong. It was established on 1 July 1997 pursuant to the Basic Law. It hears appeals on civil and criminal matters from the High Court, and may confirm, reverse or vary the decision of the lower courts. The Court of Final Appeal is headed by the Chief Justice, who is the President of the court. The Court of Final Appeal is the former French Mission Building, which was occupied successively by the Education Department headquarters, the Victoria District Court, the Supreme Court, and the Information Services Department. It is one of the declared monuments in Hong Kong.

$3: Judicial Robes
Judicial robes, including wigs, are a uniform that underlines the dignity and impartiality of the judicial process. The design of Judges' robes remains the same after Hong Kong's change of sovereignty in 1997. In the case of the Court of Final Appeal established on 1 July 1997, new judicial robes had to be designed. Judicial robes are regarded by many as a distinctive symbol of the continuation of the common law in Hong Kong. The stamp presents the judicial attire for different courts, namely (from left to right), the Court of Final Appeal, the Magistrates' Courts, the District Court (for criminal cases) and the Court of First Instance of the High Court (for criminal cases).

$5: The Chief Justice's Mace
The Mace is a ceremonial staff that symbolises the office of the Chief Justice and the institution of the independent Judiciary upholding the rule of law. Since 1 July 1997, the emblem of the HKSAR has replaced the crown at the top of the staff. Each January, the Judiciary organizes the Ceremonial Opening of the Legal Year to focus public attention on the rule of law and the administration of justice. At the Ceremonial Opening, the Mace is carried by a mace-bearer preceding the Chief Justice.

Comment: I don't have any more comment on this set.

Estonia Christmas FDC

Estonia FDC
Name: Christmas
Date of Issue: 20 November 2008

"Faster, faster," the Snowman shouts, not angrily at all, and waves his splendid hat. Why do I always come first? He thinks and watches the Christmas presents briskly climb over the crest of the hill on their skis. "Here we come," they yell and gather speed, with the eyes bulging and out of breath with exertion. "Hurry up, or I have to go into the house myself to get the presents into the sack under the Christmas tree, but it's as hot there as in Africa," the Snowman says worriedly. "No, you do not, we'll be there is a jiffy," the Christmas presents soothe him, bracing themselves for the last effort. And before the Snowman can understand, the presents are all nicely in the sack ready and waiting for their happy owner. Merry Christmas!

Comment: I think this design might be favoured by children collectors, very cute idea of design.
