On the 8-24th of August 2008, XXIX Olympic games will take place in Beijing, China. Representatives of 28 sports will contest for 302 sets of medals. In the opening ceremony organizers are expecting to see the flags of 205 national Olympic committees and that would be a record of all Olympics ever. Lithuanian flag, of course, will also be there. The sports delegation of our country will consist of 70 athletes, which is a new record of Lithuania.

First Olympic silver medals to Lithuania were brought 56 years ago by three Lithuanian basketball players Kazys Petkevičius, Justinas Lagunavičius and Stepas Butautas, who played in the USSR team. Since then Lithuanian representatives always come home with trophies from the summer Olympics. The collection of our athletes now embraces over 100 medals, including 29 gold ones.

In Beijing discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna will contest for his third Olympic gold. Strong and experienced Lithuanian pentathlon athletes, road and trek cyclists, boxers, wrestlers and canoe rowers will also strive for victories. Basketball team plans to fight for medals as well, although not all best players will be able to participate. For Daina Gudzinevičiūtė, Virgilijus Alekna, Andrejus Zadneprovskis and Ramūnas Vyšniauskas these Olympics will be the fourth in their careers.
