5Lt: The Order of Vytautas the Great with the Golden Chain
The highest state award of Lithuania was instituted in 1930 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas. It was designed by artist Jonas Burba.
The Order is awarded to honor Lithuanian and foreign heads of state and citizens for distinguished services to the State of Lithuania.
In pre-war independent Lithuania, the Order of Vytautas the Great with the Golden Chain was conferred on President of Estonia Konstantin Päts (1934), Presidents of Latvia Alberts Kviesis (1931) and Kārlis Ulmanis (1937), President of Finland Pehr Evind Svinhufvud (1931).
After the restoration of Lithuanian independence, the Order of Vytautas the Great with the Golden Chain was bestowed on President of Estonia Arnold Rüütel (2004), Juan Carlos I, King of Spain (2005), King Albert II of Belgium (2006), Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (2006), Emperor Akihito of Japan (2007).
