The predecessor of the National Library of China was the Beijing Library established in 1909. Today, the library, consisting of its headquarters north of Beijing's Zizhuyuan Park and the Ancient Books Library west to Beihai Park, is a national repository of the home publications, a national bibliographic center, and a national center of ancient books protection. Thanks to a century of cultural deposit, the National Library serves as a systematic national cultural treasury housing a great number of precious ancient books, represented by the Wenjin Chamber copy of Complete Collection of the Four Treasuries and Yongle Encyclopedia. It has made a great contribution to the promotion of the Chinese civilization. With distinctive reading and exhibition halls, state-of-the-art facilities, a wide collection of books, and diverse services, the National Library is now one of the largest and most modern-equipped libraries in the world.
