Malaysia State Emblems FDC

Malaysia FDC
Name: State Emblems of Malaysia
Issue date: 2007 September 25th

The National and State Emblems is a symbol of pride to the people of a tate or nation. Each symbol in the emblem has its own specific meaning.

Designs: 1st Row, From left to right.

Emblem of Malaysia
The National Emblem (Coat of Arms) of Malaysia (Jata Negara in Malay) consists of a shield guarded by two tigers. On the top of the shield is a yellow crescent with a 14-pointed star. A banner with the phrase "Unity is Strength" (Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu) written in both romanized Malay and Jawi is located below the shield. The original English words were replaced by Jawi some time after independence.

The yellow colour of the crescent and the star symbolises the country's monarchy. The crescent also represents Islam as the official religion while the star represents the thirteen states and the federal territories of Malaysia. (See also Malaysia's Federal star.) Originally, the fourteen-pointed star represented the original fourteen states of Malaysia, which included Singapore. It was not changed when Singapore left the federation, but it has generally been accepted that the 14th point represents the Federal Territories. More….

Sultanate of Kedah
The wreath of paddy symbolizes agriculture, the States principle commodity. The red background colour is the traditional colour of the State, signifying prosperity. The crescent symbol signifies Islam while the shield symbolizes the role of the Sultan as the protector and guardian of his subjects.

Elective Monarchy of Negeri Sembilan
The nine stalks of rice on the shield represents the nine states in the federation of the Old Negeri Sembilan. The red colour in the shield reflects the past British connection. The black colour denotes the Datuk-Datuk Undang Yang Empat and Tunku Besar Tampin, whereas the yellow colour signify the Yang di-Pertuan Besar. The sword and its sheath above the shield represent justice whereas the 'Changgai Puteri' between the sword and its sheath represent the sovereignty of the Ruler.

Sultanate of Pahang
The spear head that incorporates the design of the coffee leaf, with the word 'Negeri Pahang' was originally gold in colour including the staff and guard. The reason for the choice is that in 1862, gold is the number one produce in the state of Pahang. Also in the old days, it was said that nothing can stand against weapons or weapon heads made of gold. The pair of elephant tusks criss-crossed against each other in front of the spear/coffee leaf signifies the abundant existence of elephants in the state. The inclusion of 'Ya La Tif' implies that the state will be ruled and governed in soft and subtle ways that will be a blessing to all its citizens.

Sultanate of Kelantan
The crown stands for the sovereignty of the State while the two spears and two keris signifies the power of the Kelantan Malays. The symbol of the star and crescent signify Islam. The two cannons signify that the State is always ready to defend itself. The two deers serve as reminders of the period in the State's history when Che Siti Wan Kembang, the Queen of Kelantan (at the end of 14th century), ordered the State's gold coins to be stamped with the image of these deers for which she held such deep affection. The State motto reads 'In God, the Government of Kelantan Submit'.

Sultanate of Johor
The crown denotes the Ruler. The four stars at the corners of the white shield stands for the four original districts of the State, namely johor Bahru, Muar, Batu Pahat and Endau, while the star and crescent signify Islam. The two tigers recalled the period when wild beasts roamed the State. The floral decorations below the shield represent gambier and black pepper, the two main produce of the State. The State motto reads 'In The Hands of Allah'.

Sultanate of Perak
This crest which is worn by the Ruler on his headdress symbolizes his sovereignty. The crescent signifies Islam as the official religion, whereas the paddy flower stands for the primary occupation and main produce of the people and the State.

Taiwan FDC
Name: Ancient Chinese Painting "Eighteen Scholars of the T'ang" by Emperor Hui-tsung, Sung Dynasty
Date of Issue: 12 September 2007

To promote appreciation of ancient Chinese art and philately, Taiwan Post is issuing a set of ten stamps (each with a denomination of NT$5.00) based on the Sung Dynasty painting "Eighteen Scholars of the T'ang" by the Emperor Hui-tsung, which is in the National Palace Museum collection. The full painting will be printed in a se-tenant block of ten stamps in two rows of five. The ten stamps are not uniform in size. Instead there are four different sizes, enabling the se-tenant block to be broken up into compositionally coherent individual stamps.

The Sung Dynasty Emperor Hui-tsung (1082-1135) was a very gifted calligrapher and painter and was especially good at landscape, flower-and-bird, and figure paintings. Refined and elegant, his style of calligraphy is called "slender gold script" and is characterized by thin yet powerful brush strokes. "Eighteen Scholars of the T'ang" depicts a boisterous and joyous party of the era's literati, with scholars touring the garden, writing poetry, playing music, drinking and feasting. They sip tea, drink wine and eat delicacies in a garden where a creek meanders amid scattered rocks, flowers, pine trees and bamboo. Servants prepare tea and wine by a square table. The table has stretchers between the legs and is decorated with aprons and spandrels. A tea set is placed on the table. Beside the table is a bamboo tea basket with a tea tray on top. A simple wooden-framed two-panel screen sits atop spandrels and shoe feet. The upper part is mullioned and the lower part paneled. The scholars sat around a very large waisted table with recessed legs, a style popular during the T'ang and Five Dynasties. This is the best of several versions of this painting.

Ukraine FDC
Name: Great White Pelican - WWF
Issue date: 2007 September 20th

The White Pelican, Pelecanus onocrotalus also known as the Eastern White Pelican or Great White Pelican is a bird in the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe through Asia and in Africa in swamps and shallow lakes. The tree nest is a crude heap of vegetation.

This is a large pelican, at a mass of 10 kg (22 lbs), 160 cm (63 in) long and with a 280 cm (110 inch) wingspan. It differs from the Dalmatian Pelican, the only larger species of pelican, by its pure white, rather than greyish-white, plumage, a bare pink facial patch around the eye and pinkish legs. Immature birds are grey and have dark flight feathers.

More than 50% of White Pelicans breed in the Danube Delta. This pelican migrates short distances, wintering in northeast Africa. In flight, it is an elegant soaring bird, with the head held close to and aligned with the body by a downward bend in the neck.

Pelicans catch fish in their huge bill pouches, most, like this species, while swimming at the surface.

Like the Dalmatian Pelican, this species has declined greatly through habitat loss and persecution.

The White Pelican is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

Ukraine FDC
Name: 1100th Anniversary of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi
Issue date: 2007 September 16th

Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi (Ukrainian: Переяслав-Хмельницький, translit. Pereyaslav-Khmel′nyts′kyi; also referred to as Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy) is a city located there Alta River flows into Trubizh River in the Kiev Oblast (province) in central Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center of the Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi Raion (district), the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast. Resting some 95 km south of the nation's capital, Kiev, Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi can sometimes be confused with the Khmelnytskyi, a city on the Southern Buh River, also in Ukraine.

Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi played a significant role in the history of Ukraine. It was mentioned for the first time in the text of the Rus' treaty with the Byzantine Empire (911) as Pereyaslav-Russki, to distinguish it from Pereyaslavets in Bulgaria. Vladimir I, Prince of Kiev built here in 992 the large fortress to protect the southern limits of Kievan Rus' from raids of nomads from steppes of currently Southern Ukraine. It was a capital of the Principality of Pereyaslav from the middle of the 11th century until its demolition by Tatars in 1239, during the Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus'.

In the second half of the 16th century it became a center of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Bohdan Khmelnytsky called here the "Council of Pereyaslav", where the Ukrainian Cossacks had voted for a military alliance with Muscovy and accepted the Treaty of Pereyaslav. This event led finally to the unification of the Left-Bank Ukraine with Russia. The town known as Pereiaslav as that time, and later as Pereiaslav-Poltavskyi was renamed to Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi in 1943 to honour this event.

The current estimated population is around 25,000.

USA Gerald Ford FDC

USA FDC
Name: Gerald Rudolph Ford
Issue date: 2007 August 31st

Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr. (July 14, 1913 – December 26, 2006) was the 38th President of the United States (1974–1977), and is, to date, the only person to occupy that office who had been elected neither to the presidency nor the vice-presidency. Ford was the first person appointed to the vice presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment, and, after serving as the 40th Vice President (1973–1974) of the United States for less than a year, became President upon Richard Nixon's resignation. Prior to 1973, he served for over eight years as the Republican Minority Leader of the House of Representatives; he was first elected to Congress in 1948 from Michigan's 5th congressional district.

In foreign policy, the Helsinki Accords marked a move toward detente in the Cold War, even as the former ally South Vietnam was invaded and conquered by North Vietnam; Ford did not intervene, but did help extract friends of the U.S. At home, the economy suffered from inflation and recession. Ford came under intense criticism for granting a preemptive pardon to President Richard Nixon for his role in the Watergate scandal. In 1976, Ford narrowly defeated Ronald Reagan for the Republican nomination, but ultimately lost the general election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.

After experiencing health troubles and being admitted to hospital four times in 2006, Ford died on December 26 of that year, aged 93.

Taiwan Sun Moon Lake Postcards

Taiwan Scenic Pre-stamped Postcards
Name: Sun Moon Lake
Issue date: 2007 September 10th

This is the first scenic pre-stamped postcards in Taiwan.

Design:
1. A Night Scene
2. A Birds-eye View
3. Spring
4. Lalu Island
5. Wharf
6. Carnival

Sun Moon Lake (Chinese: 日月潭; Pinyin: Rìyuètán) is the largest lake in Taiwan as well as a popular tourist attraction. Situated in Yuchih, Nantou, the area around the Sun Moon Lake is home to the Thao tribe, one of aboriginal tribes in Taiwan.

Sun Moon Lake is located 748 meters above sea level. It is 27 meters deep and has a surface area of approximately 7.93 km².

In older English literature it was commonly referred to as Lake Candidius, after the 17th century Dutch missionary Georgius Candidius. In the middle of the lake is the Lalu Island, which is the holy ground for the Thao tribe. Originally, the Lalu was where the Thao people inhabited. Under the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, the Japanese named it the "Jade Island". After Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Government moved to Taiwan, the island was renamed "Kuang Hua" (signifying brilliance and China) and in 1978 the local government built a pavilion where annual weddings took place. The 921 Earthquake destroyed the pavilion and sunk most of the island. In recent years, due to increasing social and political awareness, more deference and recognition are being given to Taiwanese aborigines. As a result, after 921 earthquake, the island was renamed in the Thao language as "Lalu".

Several hydroelectric power plants have been built in the Sun Moon Lake since 1919. When Taipower finished the first plant in 1934, it was considered to be one of the most important infrastructure constructions of the time. The Jiji Line railroad was built to facilitate the construction.

While swimming in Sun Moon Lake is usually not permitted, there is an annual 3-km race called the Swimming Carnival of Sun Moon Lake held around the Mid-Autumn Festival each year, and in recent years the participants have numbered in the tens of thousands. Other festivies held at the same time include fireworks, laser shows, and concerts.

The lake and its surrounding countryside have been designated one of thirteen National scenic areas in Taiwan.

Portugal Nadir Afonso FDC

Portugal FDC
Name: Portuguese Artist (Nadir Afonso)
Issue date: 2007 September 5th

Born in 1920 in Codeçais, Chaves, he completed an Architecture Degree at esbap (Oporto School of Fine Arts), moving to Paris in 1946 to study art and painting at the École des Beaux Arts. His predilection for painting over architecture manifested itself at an early stage, along with his continuing search for essences and absolute.

His work under architects Le Corbusier (1948-1951) and Oscar Niemeyer (1952-1954) did nothing to alter his conviction that "architecture is not an art [...] it is a science, a team elaboration" and a "labyrinth of contingencies" in which art cannot assert itself.

He was a member of the artist collective the "Independentes" (Independents) alongside Resende, Lanhas, Pomar until 1946, and by 1943 was already fascinated by optics and geometry, although his paintings were expressionist, if not at times surrealistic. During the 40s, he progressively evolved from human figuration with supple contours, to geometric abstraction evoking landscapes, a drift that began above all while working alongside artists Fernand Léger (1948-1951) and Dewasne and Edgard Pillet. Geometric abstraction was further explored during the 50’s with a greater use of patterns in his so-called "baroque" period, and "Egyptian period" series marked by total geometric stylization (1950-1955) and his famous series of kinetic works, Espacillimité (1956-1963). He was part of the group of the Denise René gallery, exhibiting alongside Vasarely, Herbin and Bloc.

In the mid 60s he abandoned architecture, and during the 70s and 80s painted a prolific number of works for his "cities" series. At the end of the 80s, he made a number of studies of the human form using lines identical to those found in the backgrounds and compositional relations of geometry and gesture.

His books La Sensibilité plastique (1958), Les Mécanismes de la création artistique (1970), Aesthetic Synthesis (1974), Le Sens de l’Art (1983) are all products of the aesthetic reflection so characteristic of his work.
